Kathmandu, Dec 14. On the eve of the crucial election for the new leadership of the CPN-UML, senior leader Pradeep Gyawali, who has been staking claim to the General Secretary position, has reportedly refused to accept the Vice-President post offered to him. Sources close to him indicate he is only willing to become either the General Secretary or a central committee member.
"Will Not Settle for Anything Above or Below General Secretary"
Gyawali had previously made his ambitions clear in a meeting with Chairman KP Sharma Oli, stating, "I will not contest for a post above the General Secretary, nor will I contest for one below it." This firm stance was aimed squarely at the top party secretariat position. However, the Oli faction's decision to place his name on its panel for Vice-President has left him dissatisfied.
Absent from Convention Venue, Resting at Home
In a significant move during the critical pre-election period, Gyawali is not present at the party's national convention venue. Instead, close sources confirm he is resting at his home, signaling his discontent with the current arrangement. His absence adds a new twist to the ongoing power struggle between the Oli and Ishwar Pokharel factions.
Leadership Tussle on Election Eve
The UML is set to elect its new leadership through voting on Tuesday (tomorrow). The two main contenders for the chairman post, KP Sharma Oli and Ishwar Pokharel, are preparing separate panels for the election. Gyawali's unexpected stance has introduced fresh uncertainty into the party's internal dynamics and panel formations just hours before the polls.
