Kathmandu | In a move underscoring the enduring military partnership between Nepal and India, India's Chief of the Army Staff, General Dhiraj Seth, is scheduled to arrive in Nepal on August 16 for a five-day official visit at the invitation of the Chief of the Nepali Army, General Ashok Sigdel.

The visit marks General Seth's first official trip to Nepal since assuming command of the Indian Army on June 30, signaling the continued importance both nations place on their long-standing defense relationship.

During his visit, General Seth will be conferred the prestigious honorary rank of "General of the Nepali Army" (Honorary Maharathi) in a formal state ceremony. The distinction is part of a unique bilateral tradition dating back to 1950, under which the army chiefs of Nepal and India are awarded honorary ranks by each other's military-an enduring symbol of mutual trust, friendship, and institutional cooperation.

The tradition was reciprocated earlier when General Ashok Sigdel received the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army during his official visit to India in December 2024.

Defense analysts view the visit as more than ceremonial. At a time of evolving regional security dynamics in South Asia, the exchange reflects the deep strategic, cultural, and professional ties between the two neighboring armies. The visit is expected to further strengthen military cooperation, expand defense dialogue, and reinforce one of the region's most distinctive bilateral military traditions.
