"Red Paint Protest": Mahesh Basnet's Car Targeted by "Genji Youth" in Daring Roadside Attack
7th Mangsir, Kathmandu. In a dramatic and symbolic act of protest, a vehicle carrying senior Nepali Congress leader Mahesh Basnet was splattered with red paint by a group identifying as "Genji Youth" in Morang today. The audacious attack occurred in the heart of Biratnagar, ironically while a police van was escorting his car.
The Brazen Ambush: What Happened?
The incident took place on the Airport Road as Basnet was on his way to attend a youth assembly program in Sunsari. Eyewitnesses and video evidence show two young men lunging from the roadside and hurling balloons filled with red paint at the moving car. The attack forced the vehicle to a sudden stop.
The Chase and Arrests
Police personnel from the escort van immediately apprehended the two individuals. The arrested have been identified as:
Arjit Kunwar (19), from Biratnagar-2
Sanjog Gautam (25), from Biratnagar-1
Both are currently held at the District Police Office, Morang. A video of the duo being taken away shows them shouting slogans against Basnet, underscoring the political motive behind the act.
Motive: A "Symbolic" Political Statement
In a statement to OnlineKhabar, arrested youth Sanjog Gautam confirmed the act was a deliberate "symbolic protest" against Mahesh Basnet and his party, the CPN-UML.
Basnet's Reaction: "A Mockery of Democracy"
While downplaying the personal risk, Mahesh Basnet condemned the act's implications. He stated, "As we were leaving the airport, two boys hiding on the side threw balloons filled with water and abir (color). The police later controlled them, and we moved on." However, he strongly criticized the intent, calling it an attempt to obstruct his movement and labeling the incident "a mockery of democracy."
