Claudia Sheinbaum has firmly assured international fans that there is “no risk” to visitors attending upcoming World Cup matches in Mexico, following days of cartel-related unrest triggered by a major military operation.

The violence erupted after Mexican forces killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the powerful head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), on February 22. His death sparked coordinated reprisals across at least 20 Mexican states, raising global concerns about security just weeks before key football fixtures.

Despite the unrest, authorities in Jalisco have now lifted the emergency alert, signaling that order has been restored. Governor Pablo Lemus confirmed that security forces have stabilized the situation and reinforced protection measures around major venues and tourist hubs.

Importantly, FIFA has reiterated that it has no intention of relocating matches from any Mexican host city. Playoff games remain scheduled for late March as planned, underscoring confidence in the country’s security preparations.

President Sheinbaum emphasized that federal and state authorities are working in full coordination to guarantee safety for players, teams, and fans. “Mexico is ready,” she stated, projecting calm amid what officials describe as a contained and controlled security challenge.

With emergency measures lifted in Jalisco and international governing bodies standing firm, Mexico now shifts its focus back to football - determined to ensure the world’s biggest sporting celebration proceeds without disruption.
